5 Must-Have Items for Caregivers

Being a caregiver is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, responsibilities you will pursue. At times, the tasks required of the job can become physically and mentally strenuous. When undertaking such a significant role in one’s life, it is important to be educated and well-prepared to handle any situation.

Possessing a few basic tools on hand can be extremely beneficial when caring for your loved one. Not only can these tools make your job easier as a caregiver, but they can also potentially be lifesaving for the person you are caring for.

Must-Have Items for Caregivers

1. An updated list of all medications

Being a full-time caregiver, keeping an updated list of your loved one’s medications is crucial. Update the list as often as necessary. In case of a medical emergency, it is important to be aware of what medication and dosages they are taking. If you assist your loved one to a doctor’s visit bring an updated copy with you.

2. Seven-day pill organizer

The role of a caregiver is extremely detail-oriented. When it comes to medication, there may be various scripts or dosages your loved one needs to take on a certain day or time. Using a pill organizer will keep all of the necessary medication organized, limiting any confusion as to what needs to be taken and when. We recommend using a seven-day pill organizer that has multiple sections.

3. Three-ring binder

When it comes to doctor’s visits, keeping a three-ring binder with medical records and notes is important in case of any questions or concerns. Utilize a calendar to organize and keep track of appointments.

4. First-Aid kit

A First-Aid kit can provide you with items necessary to provide the proper care in non-emergent situations. The items in the kit should be regularly checked for expiration dates.

5. Sanitary articles

Sanitary products are important to protect both you and your loved one.

  • Latex or non-latex gloves can be used when preparing food or cleaning up.

  • Masks can be worn to prevent the spread of illness.

  • Hydrogen peroxide can be used to kill germs as well as clean sinks or showers.

These are five must-have items every caregiver should have on hand. No matter what the day may bring, it pays to be prepared.
